UPDATED: Man Killed In West Saint John Crash

Saint John police say a 36-year-old man has died after a collision on the city’s west side on Wednesday evening.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on Route 1 westbound near the Catherwood Street exit just after 8 p.m.

In a news release Thursday morning, police said two vehicles were involved in the head-on collision.

Spokesperson Jim Hennessy said a 36-year-old man from Grand Bay-Westfield was killed.

Hennessy said two other people remain in the hospital as of Thursday morning but there was no update on their conditions.

Photos posted to social media showed one vehicle on its side and the other with significant front-end damage.

The westbound lanes of the highway were closed to traffic for several hours along with Harbour Bridge in both directions.

The force’s Major Crime Unit is still investigating the cause of the collision.
