Climate Change Needs To Be Election Issue

A national group wants global warming to become more of an election issue.

Craig Stewart from Climate Proof Canada says he would like to see the political parties not only embrace climate change but look at ways we can help mitigate the problem.

“We are pushing all federal parties to prioritize climate defense as part of their campaign messaging,” explains Stewart.

“We have no doubt that climate change in terms of emissions reduction is going to be a topic. However, we can’t just focus on emissions reduction or energy efficiency.”

Stewart adds he would like to see a discussion about what we can do to better protect ourselves from severe weather cause by climate change.

“We need to play climate defense now and we need programming in place today. For instance a home rating system. You know we have an EnerGuide system that rates homes for energy efficiency. We would ideally have a similar system that rates homes for climate resiliency.”

Stewart says all the forest fires and smoke from them, and floods in Europe show we need to do something now, not 20 or 30 years down the line.
