Sea Dogs Train With City Firefighters

Members of the Saint John Sea Dogs spent a few hours on Wednesday learning about what it takes to be a Saint John firefighter.

Several players participated in exercises at the Saint John Firefighter Training Academy in East Saint John

Division Chief Peter Ehler says they took part in a combat challenge, which entails running up and down the stairs with hose loads, pulling them to the roof, and carrying tools through a set of pylons.

“Advancing a hose and hitting a target and a dummy drag where they have to drag a 150-pound dummy about 40 feet out and back,” Ehler said.

Ehler noted the jobs have similarities where a firefighter never fights a blaze alone and hockey players rely on their teammates in order to win.

Sea Dogs defenceman William Villeneuve said it was challenging with the heat, wearing bunker gear and carrying equipment.

“It weighed 50 pounds so, like I said they are built [differently] but it’s nice to compare us to them and push each other today,” Villeneuve said.
