A former interim leader of the New Brunswick NDP has been named the party’s permanent leader.
Mackenzie Thomason was acclaimed after the party’s leadership race this year, the NDP announced Tuesday.
“We wish to thank all of those who participated in the race, both to our members who supported the various candidates for leadership and the candidates themselves,” the party said in a news release.
Thomason became interim leader in March of 2019 after former leader Jennifer McKenzie stepped down the previous month.
He resigned from the role following last September’s provincial election after the party received just 1.66 per cent September provincial election. Chris Thompson has been serving as interim leader ever since.
The party said they are confident they can provide real solutions to real problems under Thomason’s leadership.
“With Mackenzie as leader of the New Brunswick NDP, we will be the party to tackle the major issues facing New Brunswickers. Cost of living and precarious work is on the rise, but wages aren’t. Finding a reasonable place to live is becoming an impossibility for some in today’s economy,” said the release.
Thomason will assume leadership on Tuesday.
