Officials unveiled initial design concepts Monday night for the proposed redesign of Loyalist Plaza and the public space around Market Slip.
It is part of a broader project to redevelop the Fundy Quay site and renew some of the public space in that area of uptown Saint John.
Plans include an enhanced stage, ice rink, space for vendors, and tidal steps leading to the water.
Brent McGovern, commissioner of utilities and infrastructure at the City of Saint John, said the waterfront transformation will be quite inviting for both residents and visitors.
“With things like opening up the waterfront, or Harbour Passage, and adding more space to Harbour Passage.”
McGovern mentioned that the entire project is going to be 99 per cent accessible for all.
“Also having places that give people of different heights, and physical abilities, rest and take in the beautiful oceanfront.”
McGovern has already heard from several citizens who mentioned that there needs to be more access to water.
Dan Glenn, design lead for the project, cautioned that the plans are “a little over budget” so there are some aspects that might need to be trimmed.
Glenn said demolition will take place over the coming months, with construction anticipated to begin in the spring and take a couple of years.
The transformation is part of a $27-million investment to prepare the Fundy Quay site for development and renew some of the surrounding public space.
Local developer Dr. David Elias is leading plans for a proposed multi-use development at Fundy Quay featuring commerical and residential spaces. The full cost of the project is anticipated to be in the magnitude of $300 million.
The plans also include extending Harbour Passage around the Fundy Quay site and installing a pedway between the site and Market Square.
