It’s been 32 years since 14 women were gunned down at École Polytechnique in Montreal.
UNB Saint John will host a vigil Monday night in recognition of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women remembering these women and all victims of gender-based violence.
Organizers will remember Geneviève Bergeron, Hélène Colgan, Nathalie Croteau, Barbara Daigneault, Anne-Marie Edward, Maud Haviernick, Maryse Laganière, Maryse Leclair, Anne-Marie Lemay, Sonia Pelletier, Michèle Richard, Annie St-Arneault, Annie Turcotte, and Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz.
“As a community, it is important for us to address societal challenges to build a more just and inclusive world,” says Dr. Paul J. Mazerolle, president and vice-chancellor of UNB.
“Events such as these provide an opportunity for our community to come together to elevate voices while fostering a culture of support.”
After a tribute to the 14 women who lost their lives, there will be presentations about violence against women by representatives of local organizations who support and protect women and a short walk to the Three Sisters Lamp.
People are encouraged to attend to reflect and remember as everyone works to end gender-based violence through education and hearing from survivors.
The vigil begins at 7 p.m. at the Diamond Jubilee Cruise Terminal. COVID-19 protocols will be followed at the event.
On Dec. 6, UNB will hold a vigil at the Diamond Jubilee Cruise Terminal in recognition of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, along with the anniversary of the murder of 14 women at École Polytechnique.
