N.B. MP Calls For End To Ottawa Demonstration

A New Brunswick Liberal MP is calling for all three levels of government to find a peaceful way to end the Ottawa demonstration.

Saint John-Rothesay MP Wayne Long spoke out about the ongoing demonstration that has taken over part of the nation’s capital.

“What may have started as a group of well-intentioned and frustrated truck drivers who I respect, people trying to provide for their families and stand up for their communities has turned into something very different,” Long said in a social media post on Monday.

Long said while he will always defend the rights of Canadians to protest peacefully and challenge the government, no one has a right to “blatantly disregard the law and terrorize people of a community for over a week.”

“Whether the original intentions were right or wrong, it’s now become an opportunity for others to drive their own agendas and attempt to divide our country,” Long wrote.

“People need to speak up. Local leaders from all political backgrounds need [to] say this is not OK.”

Long acknowledged that Canadians are all “tired and frustrated” from COVID-19 but added that he will continue to put his faith in Public Health officials as he has for the past two years.

“Mandates are being rolled back in many countries, and now in some provinces. It will happen here too, and I believe we are close,” he said.

“It’s no longer safe for anyone to allow this protest to continue. I call on all three levels of Government to find a peaceful way to end this. Now.”
