Snow crab stock in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence is healthy and showing signs of continued growth, that according to Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
As a result, they’ve raised the total allowable catch for 2022 to 32,519 tonnes.
That’s up from 24,261 tonnes in 2021.
The Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, the Honourable Joyce Murray says this increase will benefit many coastal and Indigenous communities of eastern New Brunswick, Gaspésie, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Magdalen Islands, while also ensuring the growth and sustainability of this important stock.
The opening date of for the snow crab fishery for 2022 is not yet known.
Weather and ice conditions will be evaluated before a recommendation is made.
