Irving Pulp & Paper is seeking input on a new $150-million environmental project at its mill on Saint John’s west side.
Officials say the new on-site facility would modernize the current water treatment being done to remove, reuse and recycle materials created during the pulping process.
According to the company, it would also help it to comply with a new enforcement approach to federal regulations, and reduce the amount of water currently being sourced from Spruce Lake by up to 50 per cent.
“The construction of this new on-site facility using world-class technology will help us continue to achieve our long-term environmental objectives by substantially improving water quality while reducing water consumption by up to 50 percent,” said Mark Mosher, vice-president of Pulp & Paper.

The company recently submitted an environmental impact assessment to the provincial Department of Environment and Local Government.
Officials expect construction would take around 22 months to complete once the EIA is granted and all applicable construction permits have been issued.
