Don’t take the lawnmower out just yet, wait another month.
It’s No Mow May across the region.
Project Lead for the Petitcodiac Watershed Alliance Brittany Cormier says it helps pollinator populations at this critical time of year, “It can really make a difference in helping them (pollinators) mitigate the impacts we have thrown their way. Pesticides, insecticides, habitat loss, these are all really big impacts.”
She asks anyone who has a lawn to be lazy for a few weeks, “Leave the mower alone for just awhile. Give it a try. See what comes in and try to engage in the biodiversity of your yard and maybe you’ll find something you didn’t know existed there.”
Cormier says last year during No Mow May, the common blue violet, which is a provincial flower, was prominent in areas that were not cut.
