Man Charged In First Nation Shooting Incident

A man from Esgenoôpetitj First Nation has been arrested and charged after a shooting in the community.

Neguac RCMP were called to a disturbance at a home on Algonquin Road in Esgenoôpetitj First Nation (formerly Burnt Church) last Thursday around 1:15 p.m. and found a 36-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim was taken to hospital with what police say were life-threatening injuries.

The suspect had fled but a 27-year-old man was identified and he was arrested in a wooded area of the first nation near Condo Court around 3:45 p.m.

As part of the investigation, police found a prohibited weapon.

Dylan Dedam appeared in Miramichi Provincial Court on Friday and was charged with possession of a prohibited weapon.

He remains in custody until a court appearance on Tuesday afternoon for a bail hearing.

Mounties believed the incident was isolated and did not meet the criteria for an Alert Ready message.
