Second Entangled North Atlantic Right Whale Sighted

Another entangled North Atlantic right whale has been spotted in the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada say the 38-year-old male, identified as Meridian, was seen on June 30th between Miscou Island, New Brunswick, and the Magdalen Islands, Quebec.

He was previously seen off the coast of Massachusetts, United States, on February 11, 2022.

DFO continues its search for the whale, while marine mammal response partners are on standby.

If it is seen again and conditions allow, efforts will be made to attempt to disentangle it.

There’s no word on the type of gear that the whale is entangled in.

This is the second North Atlantic right whale entanglement reported in Canada this year.

The first entangled whale, was a 14-year-old female, who was spotted in May, east of Gaspe, Quebec.
