What’s Open And Closed On Monday

Monday will be a day off for some Canadians to mark the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

The National Day of Mourning coincides with Her Late Majesty’s State Funeral in London, which begins at 7 a.m. Atlantic Time.

It has been designated a one-time holiday for federal public service workers across the country, which includes Service Canada and Canada Post.

But Ottawa left it up to each province and territory to determine whether they would also mark it as a holiday, and to what extent.

The decision has led to confusion and frustration for many Canadians from coast to coast.

New Brunswick observes National Day of Mourning

In New Brunswick, all provincial government offices and public schools will be closed for the day.

It will be treated as any other holiday for management and non-union employees in Parts I, II, and III of the provincial public service.

This includes central government departments and agencies, as well as the anglophone and francophone public school systems.

“While government offices and public schools will be closed, this holiday will be optional for private sector businesses and employers,” the province said in a news release.

Many people were left wondering whether medical appointments that were scheduled for Monday will proceed.

Horizon Health announced that normal operations will continue at all of its hospitals and that all appointments, surgeries and services will proceed.

However, Horizon-operated health centres and community-based programming will be closed for the day.

A provincial commemorative service for the late Queen Elizabeth II will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton.

The service will be by invitation only due to limited space but will be livestreamed in English and in French on GNB’s YouTube channels.

A procession of honour will take place to the cathedral from Government House prior to the ceremony.
