West Side Fire Deemed Suspicious

An early morning blaze in west Saint John is being treated as suspicious, according to fire officials.

Platoon Chief Ed Moyer said crews were called to a report of an outside fire in the Germain Street West area.

Moyer said when the first crews arrived on the scene around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, they found a garage engulfed in flames.

“That triggered an upgrade to a structure fire and three other crews responded,” Moyer said in a phone interview.

Flames also burned part of the exterior of a nearby home, he said, but crews were able to save it from any significant damage.

Moyer said most crews were freed within an hour, although one crew remained on the scene for about three-and-a-half hours during the investigation phase.

“It’s suspicious at this time,” he said of the fire, though the exact cause is still under investigation by Fire Prevention and Saint John Police.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
