Inquest Called Into Woman’s Death At Hospital

It has been nearly two years since Hillary Hooper died by suicide in the Saint John Regional Hospital’s psychiatric unit.

Now, a coroner’s inquest has been called to look into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.

Hooper, who was 27, died on Dec. 9, 2020, following what the Department of Justice describes as an “incident” at the hospital.

The presiding coroner and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses in the case to determine exactly what happened.

While the New Brunswick Coroner Service does not make any findings of legal responsibility, the jury will have an opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances.

The inquest is scheduled to take place in Saint John from March 13 to 18.
