Crews Battle Overnight Blaze On Tower Street

City fire crews were kept busy with an overnight fire on the lower west side.

Saint John firefighters responded to a fire around 3:30 a.m. in a vacant building at 260-262 Tower Street.

Acting Platoon Chief Patrick Thebeau said the building’s balloon frame structure made fighting the fire more challenging.

“That was two roofs to the builidng [and] multiple ceilings to the building so it was a lot of digging to get at the fire and slow it down,” Thebeau said,

No injuries were reported.

Thebeau said arriving firefighters found fire in the rear of the building.

He said the building did have tenants recently.

“The last tenant showed up. They moved out a week or a week and a half prior. Their name was still on the lease but, they did move out a couple of weeks ago,” Thebeau said.

Thebeau said fire crews started leaving the scene around 7:30 a.m, and at 9:30 a.m., one crew was assisting the fire investigator at the scene.
