Body recovered near Fredericton walking bridge

A body has been recovered near a walking bridge in Fredericton, say police.

First responders were called to the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge on Tuesday morning.

Police had received a report of a body seen along the banks of the Saint John River.

“Please be advised that the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge is currently closed as Fredericton Police Force are responding to a call,” police said on social media around 8:30 a.m.

“We are asking the public to please avoid the area so police and first responders can safely do their work.

Emergency crews remained on the scene until around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

In an update Tuesday afternoon, police said they had identified the body and notified the next of kin.

“No further details, including the name of the individual will be released at the request of the family,” said police.
