No weapon found after report of man waving rifle: police

Reports of an armed person prompted a heavy police presence in part of Saint John on Tuesday.

Officers were called to an apartment building on Wright Street just before 11:30 a.m.

“It was alleged that a man was waving a rifle out a window at another person on the street,” police said in a news release Tuesday afternoon.

Arriving officers cleared the immediate area and contained the building in question, according to the release.

Police asked residents living near the area of Wright Street between Gooderich Street and Autumn Street to shelter in place.

A police negotiator made contact with the resident, who police said was cooperative and exited the building.

“The police subsequently searched the apartment and no firearm was located,” said the release.

No charges have been laid as the investigation continues.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Saint John Police Force at 506-648-3333 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
