Dominion Park to celebrate grand reopening

A west Saint John park will celebrate its grand reopening on Saturday.

City officials say phase one of upgrades at Dominion Park are complete.

Celebrations will begin at 1 p.m with remarks from Coun. Greg Norton, MLA Dorothy Shephard, MP Wayne Long, and Derek Chaisson with the Dominion Park Community Association.

There will be a free BBQ (while supplies last), DJ, steel drum band, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, face painting, and balloon twisting.

You can also join a special First Nations Storytelling session from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

A three-phase master plan was established for the park, which suffered significant damage during historic flooding in 2018 and 2019.

Phase one upgrades included a permanent and accessible canteen building, accessible washrooms, a Sunset Plaza, new picnic facilities, and improved beach access.

Other enhancements include changerooms, improves electrical infrastructure and lighting, and a designated area for lifeguards and maintenance operations.

Phase two and three will include a playground, a multi-use sports court, and a boat launch.
