Saint John aims to bring home national baseball title

A New Brunswick baseball team is in Alberta hoping to bring home a national championship.

The Saint John Alpines are competing in the 2023 Canada Men’s National Championships in Red Deer.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, team president Terre Hunter said they are feeling pretty excited.

“This is the first time that we have been to the nationals as a team since 2002,” Hunter said in a phone interview.

Saint John secured its spot in the national tournament after winning the 2022 provincial senior baseball title against the Fredericton Royals.

Hunter said the team is confident with the lineup that it has heading into the championship.

“We’ve picked up quite a few pitchers and we’re optimistic that we have some good reliable arms. We’ve added a couple of players that are good hitters as well,” he said.

Ten teams are taking part and have been split into two five-team divisions for the round-robin portion of the tournament.

Saint John will face Saskatchewan and British Columbia on Thursday, Manitoba on Friday, and Alberta on Saturday. The medal games are set for Sunday.
