Major renovations have been completed on one of the two fire stations in the Kennebecasis Valley.
The Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department’s Station 2 used to share space with the Quispamsis Civic Centre.
However, the fire department purchased the building on Municipal Drive and renovated it to become solely the fire station.
“There’s a whole lot more room for the crews and it’s just really good for morale. It was long overdue,” Shawn White, deputy fire chief, said in an interview.
“It allows us to improve our operations and we can deploy trucks better with that station because there’s more room there.”
Renovations included an expanded living quarters for firefighters and a larger fitness centre to help them stay in shape.
White said they were able to use all of their existing fitness equipment and move it into the new “state-of-the-art” centre.
The department also added a hose drying tower, which White said can also be used for training purposes.
“There are a number of multi-storey buildings in the valley and this allows us to use our equipment that we’ve purchased and helps our firefighters stay up to date on current tactics,” he said.
White said the renovations came in on budget at just over $3.6 million. The cost will be split between the towns of Quispamsis and Rothesay.
