More flaring than usual possible at Irving Oil refinery

Some Saint John residents have reported seeing more flaring than usual at the Irving Oil refinery.

But a spokesperson for the company says there is no reason for residents to be concerned.

“Our operations are returning to normal after our fall turnaround and residents may be seeing more flaring than usual,” Katherine d’Entremont said in an email Monday.

Operation Ram was one of the refinery’s largest maintenance projects in recent years, marking a $190 million investment.

D’Entremont said they were forced to sound their emergency alarm on Sunday due to a “minor operational issue” at the refinery.

“The situation was quickly resolved with no offsite impact or risk to public safety,” said d’Entremont, who did not provide any other details.
