Halifax Shipyard names worker who died in “tragic accident”

We are learning more about the 43-year-old who died at the Halifax Shipyard.

Jamie Knight passed away after being hit by some equipment on Monday.

The Irving Shipyard calls it a tragic accident and adds their thoughts are with Knight’s family.

“We are continuing to focus on providing the resources and support needed during this difficult time, including grief counselling services and granting leaves of absence to any employee who needs time away,” Irving said in a statement on Wednesday. “Safety is and always will be Irving Shipbuilding’s top priority.”

The Department of Labour has put a stop work order in place while they review snow clearing practices at the shipyard and the equipment used to clear it away.

The shipyard says it remains committed to providing support to Knight’s family, co-workers and friends.

“We are committed to understanding how the accident happened, acting on any recommendations arising from the investigations, learning from this, and moving forward together.”
