The Saint John Police Force will be cracking down on seatbelt usage this week.
It is the latest traffic enforcement campaign to be conducted by the force.
“The campaign will focus on educating the public about the dangers associated with driving without properly wearing a seatbelt and on the enforcement of seatbelt legislation,” the police force said in a news release.
According to police, legislation requires that all occupants of a vehicle wear a seatbelt properly.
You cannot operate a vehicle with more occupants than seatbelts, and all children must be in a child seating and restraint system.
A rear-facing seat should be used until a baby is at least one year old and 22 pounds.
A forward-facing seat should be used from 22 pounds to 40 pounds, from at least age one to generally four-and-a-half years.
After that, a booster seat should be used until the child turns nine years old, weighs 79 to 80 pounds, or is 145 centimetres tall.
Provincial data shows more than 40 per cent of vehicle occupants who die in a collision are not wearing their seatbelt.
Drivers convicted of a seatbelt offence will be fined a minimum of $172.50.
The seatbelt campaign begins Monday and will continue until Friday.
