Dates announced for Saint John’s first powwow

Dates have been announced for the first traditional powwow ever to be held in Saint John.

The Menahqesk Powwow will take place at TD Station on Oc.t 26 and 27, officials announced Wednesday.

Menahqesk is the Wolastoqey name for the area, meaning “where the sea takes the land.”

The powwow is an opportunity for Indigenous peoples to socialize, dance, sing, and honour their cultures.

The Saint John powwow is one of 13 such events taking place throughout New Brunswick this summer and fall.

According to city officials, the two-day event could attract upwards of 10,000 people to Greater Saint John.

Council previously approved taking up to $50,000 from its reserve funds to put toward the event, which is being hosted in partnership with Indigenous media company Double Curve Media.

More details about the powwow are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
