Norton Elementary students to begin school year in Sussex

Students at Norton Elementary School will be starting their school year in the nearby community of Sussex.

Water damage was found on some exterior walls of the building while preparations were underway for re-siding.

Superintendent Derek O’Brien said engineers are still assessing the scope of the work and how long it will take to repair.

In the meantime, the 100 or so students who attend Norton Elementary School will be bussed to Sussex Elementary School.

“Our primary goal was to keep all students together in a school nearby. We are very fortunate that Sussex Elementary School has sufficient space to house staff and students, and they have offered to welcome Norton during this time,” O’Brien wrote in a statement to our newsroom.

“Although Norton and Sussex are sharing the building, there is no need to combine Norton and Sussex classes. Norton students will remain with their classmates and regular assigned teachers.”

There are currently around 450 students at Sussex Elementary, which has a maximum capacity of just over 700.

In terms of transportation, O’Brien said bus pick-up times will likely not be impacted as a result of the changes. Students who normally walk to the school will be provided bus transportation to Sussex.
