Fundy Shores secures land for future community centre

A brand new community centre is being eyed for the Rural Community of Fundy Shores, west of Saint John.

The municipality announced this week it has secured land at Route 175 and Route 790 in Lepreau.

Mayor Denny Cogswell said the idea for a community centre stemmed from engagement sessions held in 2023.

“The community really pushed for a lot of key items, one being a community centre. Health care was a big one, fitness was another one and child care was one as well,” Cogswell told our newsroom.

“We’re hoping that the community centre will have placement for a lot of those things.”

Now that the land has been secured, council will look to develop a financial strategy and building plan over the next 12 to 18 months.

Cogswell said they also plan to visit community centres in other municipalities as they work to build ideas.

“We’re going to be working hard on this file,” he said, adding it was too early to put a timeline on the project.

More community consultation will take place over the coming months.
