Investigation underway after death of Elsipogtog First Nation man

An investigation is underway by the Serious Incident Response Team after the death of an Indigenous man from Elsipogtog First Nation.

SiRT was contacted early Monday morning after the man was shot on Sunday.

According to preliminary details, SiRT says police were called after a man allegedly threatened to harm himself.

Two officers responded and were approached by a man who was reportedly carrying weapons.

One officer discharged a taser, but police say it was ineffective. The other officer fired his gun, and the man was pronounced dead a short time later.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault, intimate partner violence or other issues of public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
