Ottawa spending $250M to end encampments, want funds matched

Ottawa is forking over funding to address homelessness and end encampments across the country but are calling on other levels of government to help.

The feds say through Canada’s Housing Plan they are ready to negotiate agreements with provinces and territories who are willing to match their investment of $250 million.

The money will go to more shelters, transitional homes and services to help those in encampments, find housing.

The funding is part of what was outlined in Budget 2024 and falls in line with other federal initiatives to help address the housing crisis including the Affordable Housing Fund and the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund.

Minister of Housing Sean Fraser says we can and must do better.

“Across Canada, playgrounds, parks, and public squares have become the last refuge for too many individuals. The harsh realities faced by those living without stable shelter do not reflect the values we hold as Canadians. This reality divides our communities and impacts us all. We must work together to help the country’s most vulnerable find safe and affordable places to call home.”
