Arrest made in Fredericton library break-in

Fredericton police have made an arrest following a break-and-enter at the downtown public library.

A 31-year-old man is facing charges of break and enter, theft over $5,000 and mischief over $5,000.

Officers responded to the library branch on Carleton Street during the early morning hours of Sept. 30.

“Responding officers discovered extensive damage to the property, and through investigation, also discovered the theft of several items,” police said in a release.

City staff said fire extinguishers were released throughout the building, walls were broken to access locked officers, electronics were damaged and a water fountain was ripped off the wall, among other things.

The total damages are estimated to be in the range of $50,000 to $100,000.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Meanwhile, the library is expected to reopen to the public on Tuesday.
