St. Stephen RCMP investigate possible hate-motivated incident

RCMP have arrested a 40-year-old man from St. Stephen following a possible hate-motivated incident in the community.

Officers responded to a report of a man yelling and uttering threats at a resident outside of a home on Rose Street around 11:20 p.m. on Nov. 16.

Investigators said the man fled the scene before officers arrived, but they were able to quickly identify a suspect.

“Throughout their investigation, it was learned that the same man had caused similar disturbances involving other members of the community, and on more than one occasion,” RCMP said in a news release on Monday.

The suspect was arrested on Nov. 19 and later released on conditions, including not having contact with the victims.

In Monday’s news release, police said they are now investigating whether this incident was hate-motivated.

“There is no place for discrimination or hatred in our communities”, Sgt. Scott Mackenzie said in the release.

“We understand that incidents such as this are upsetting to members of the public, and we want everyone to know that we are conducting a thorough investigation.”

Anyone who is a victim of or witnesses a potential hate-motivated crime or incident is encouraged to contact their local police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
