Highway 1 near Apohaqui cleared, but drivers warned to avoid roads

Highway near Apohaqui has cleared after dozens of cars and trucks were stopped on the highway westbound, heading toward Saint John.

A large Irving Oil transport truck was partially off the road, and two other trucks were also stopped nearby, blocking both westbound lanes.

All three trucks appeared to be stuck as the first torrential snow of the season pelted the road.

The RCMP was on the scene and coordinated to bring snow plows on the road in the opposite direction of typical traffic flow.

Gateway Operations says travel is currently not recommended on Highway 1 due to poor road conditions and visibility.

Much of southern New Brunswick is under a snowfall warning, with Environment Canada calling for between 15 and 20 centimetres by the time it ends on Friday morning.

The exception is Saint John and County, where forecasters only expect up to 10 centimetres of snow.
