First N.B. child and youth advocate among Order of Canada appointees

Two New Brunswickers are included in the latest list of appointees to the Order of Canada.

Bernard Richard and Diane Pitre are among 88 new appointments to one of Canada’s highest honour.

Richard served as the province’s first child and youth advocate between 2006 and 2011.

Before that, he served as a Liberal MLA for Shediac-Cap-Pelé from 1991 to 2003.

Pitre is a Canadian Armed Forces veteran who fought for reparations for those wronged by the LGBT Purge.

She continues to advocate on behalf of Purge survivors and for 2SLGBTQI+ rights in the military as co-founder of Rainbow Veterans of Canada.

Also on the list are actor Ryan Reynolds, former CTV News at Six anchor and Saint John native Steve Murphy, and Heather Rankin of the award-winning band The Rankin Family.

The Order of Canada has celebrated the outstanding achievements and wide-ranging contributions of over 8,000 people since its creation in 1967.
