Union Street building to be demolished

A building on Union Street in Saint John will be demolished in the coming week.

Firefighters spent many hours battling a blaze at 181 Union on Christmas Day that left the structure extensively damaged. It was the second fire there in as many weeks.

Mayor Donna Reardon says engineers have expressed concerns about the structure and the risk it poses to neighbouring businesses.

Once the damaged building is demolished, it will allow neighbouring businesses to reopen.
