UPDATE: Man charged after Saint John standoff

A man has been charged following a 12-hour standoff in Saint John’s north end.

Officers responded to a call on Wright Street just before midnight on Thursday night.

When they arrived, a man barricaded himself inside the residence with a firearm.

Specialized teams, including negotiators and tactical units, were on the scene.

Officers closed a section of Wright Street and asked nearby residents to stay inside.

Police said a man surrendered to officers at around 12:20 p.m. on Friday.

An 18-year-old man later appeared in court and was charged with possessing a firearm for a dangerous purpose.

He was remanded to jail and is scheduled to return to court on Monday for a bail hearing.
