Construction on new Saint John schools to start this summer

Construction on two new schools in Saint John will soon get underway, according to city staff.

Chief Administrative Officer Brent McGovern provided an update at Monday night’s council meeting.

McGovern told councillors that construction on both schools is expected to begin this summer.

“The province, Anglophone South School District and city continue work on the south end school and the north end school,” McGovern said.

“Both schools have been tendered and the application for the building permit has been submitted to the city as it relates to the north end school.”

For the south end school, McGovern said additional site work is anticipated in the coming weeks.

The new south end school in Rainbow Park will replace Prince Charles and St. John the Baptist/King Edward schools.

Meanwhile, the new north end school is being constructed on the site of the former Crescent Valley School site on Ropewalk Road and will replace Hazen White-St. Francis School and Centennial School.

Both schools are expected to be open in September of 2027.
