No new pope elected on 1st day of conclave

Cardinals have failed to pick a new pope on the first day of the conclave.

More than 130 voting cardinals are casting ballots for the next pontiff.

A cardinal needs to receive more than two-thirds majority to be elected.

Black smoke rose from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel after the first vote on Wednesday, meaning there was no consensus.

The process continues on Thursday, with up to four votes taking place each day until a new pope is elected.

White smoke coming from the chimney after a vote will indicate that a new pope has been selected.
