Do not expect to see a federal budget tabled when Parliament resumes later in May.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne was asked by reporters Wednesday if he would table a budget before summer.
Champagne said his top priority when Parliament goes back into session is to pass legislation for a promised middle-class tax cut.
“That’s step one. Step two, you’re going to have a throne speech where we’ll outline the Canadian government priorities, and there will be a fall economic statement to follow,” he added.
Being in a minority government position, the Liberals will need to find support from other parties to pass the tax cut and throne speech.
Meanwhile, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre said the prime minister is abandoning Canadians by not brining forward a budget.
“Parliament has already been shut down for nearly half a year. Now, in the face of serious economic threats, the Liberals don’t intend to present a budget this year,” said Poilievre.
“There is no roadmap forward, no economic vision, and no willingness to lead.”
