Family members locate body of missing kayaker

The search for a missing kayaker off New Brunswick’s Shediac Coast has come to a tragic end.

Family members of 34-year-old Luc Bourgeois say they located his body at sea on Thursday.

“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, support, and kindness from our community during this incredibly difficult time,” his mother said in a Facebook post.

“Your compassion has brought us strength, and we are truly surrounded by extraordinary people.”

Bourgeois left to go kayaking from the Pointe-du-Chêne wharf last Thursday. He was last seen on the water off the Shediac Coast between 1 and 2 p.m.

RCMP launched a large-scale search, which included ground search and rescue teams, a helicopter and divers.

The official search was called off on Sunday, but family and community members had continued looking for Bourgeois since then.

A GoFundMe campaign launched by the family this week has already raised more than $53,000.
