Fire at Prince of Wales gravel pit spreads into woods

An early morning fire at a gravel pit in the Prince of Wales area quickly spread into the woods.

The Musquash Fire Department said it was called to Simpson’s Pit around 4 a.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters found a large pile of stored blasting mats — estimated to be 30 feet high and 50 feet in diameter — engulfed in flames.

“The fire had spread to the surrounding woods, but was quickly extinguished by the responding firefighters. There was minimal loss to the surrounding wooded area,” the department said in a news release.

The Department of Natural Resources also responded to the scene to deal with the fire in the woods.

“The fire is currently under control but it is estimated that it will be a few more hours before the fire is completely extinguished and clean up procedures completed,” said the department.

Meanwhile, crews are still working to break down the pile of mats and extinguish the remaining flames.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Officials said there was no danger to any nearby homes or businesses.
