Update: Special air quality statement continues for Saint John area Saturday

A special air quality statement continues for Saint John County and Fundy National Park on Saturday.

The smoke is from a wildfire in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, being pushed across the Bay of Fundy by southerly winds at approximately 20 gusting to 40 kilometres per hour.

Environment Canada says air quality may vary throughout the day as wind and fire conditions shift.

People most at risk, such as older adults, pregnant individuals, infants, young children, those with chronic illnesses, and outdoor workers, are advised to limit outdoor activity and avoid strenuous exercise.

Common symptoms from smoke exposure include coughing, headaches, and throat irritation.

More serious effects, like chest pain or difficulty breathing, may also occur. Residents are urged to stay indoors, keep windows closed, and use clean air filters or portable air cleaners if available.

If you must go outside, Environment Canada says wearing a well-fitting N95 mask may help reduce exposure to fine particles, but health risks may remain.

Officials also recommend checking in on neighbours or loved ones who may be more vulnerable to poor air quality.
