Sexual Violence New Brunswick has supported thousands of victims.
Their group was established in 1975, and on Saturday, they’ll celebrate 50 years.
“Sexual Violence New Brunswick is a community-based nonprofit agency. We’ve provided a lot of low-barrier trauma-informed support to survivors of sexual violence, and that includes our support line, which runs from 5 PM to 8 AM every day, both texting and chat and talking on the phone. We offer counselling, legal assistance, advocacy, as well as support groups. We also do a lot of provincial work in terms of leading education,” Justice Lead Andie Marks told our newsroom.
She adds that specialized services for survivors of sexual violence are really important.
“There are a lot of myths and stereotypes out there around sexual violence and around who it happens to and what it looks like. Having people who understand the culture and understand the experiences that survivors are coming from. It is so important with people who are coming to us, having experienced some of the worst things that have happened to them. Being met with care and with a listening ear and with someone who is not going to judge and who is going to have the specialized knowledge and education to support them,” Marks said.
Celebrations are planned for Saturday at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton. Doors open at 6:30, and events will continue until 10 pm.
