Child poverty is still a major issue in New Brunswick despite the fact the rate has dropped for the second year in a row.
In its annual child poverty report card, the Saint John Human Development Council or HDC says the rate was 22.8 percent with 31,000 kids living in poverty.
Executive Director Randy Hatfield says the findings are disturbing with for example Ward 3 in the City of Saint John having a rate of 50 percent
Provincially: “It’s young children, children with single parents we are finding somewhat alarmingly that children of immigrants and new Canadians seem to be facing disproportionate rates of child poverty,” stated Hatfield.
The highest rate was in Campbelton at more than 37 percent, then Saint John at 32.7, Moncton had 27 and Dieppe had the lowest at 11 percent.
