The mayor of Saint John is hopeful a new home for the New Brunswick Museum will still be a reality in his city.
The previous Liberal government committed $50 million towards a new museum along the waterfront in 2017.
But the new Progressive Conservative government pulled the project, along with several others, from its capital budget in early December.
Mayor Don Darling said he later chatted with officials to get some clarity on the decision and the future of the projects.
“What I was told was they’re not scrapped,” Darling said. “They’re just being re-thought is the information I was provided. I think that’s good news.”
Darling said there is no indication when the province might revisit the project but he thinks there is still a strong business case for it.
He said the city will also keep pushing for a new school in the south central peninsula, which was not part of the 2019-20 budget.
“It’s not just a school, it’s a strong community hub and centre,” Darling said. “But also, we think it’s a key component of our growth initiative for the south end.”
