Dennis Oland Murder Trial Resumes

A member of the Saint John Police Force’s Major Crime Unit was on the stand on Day 14 of Dennis Oland’s second-degree murder trial.

Const. Tony Gilbert said Monday he was told to attend the Far End Corporation office at 52 Canterbury Street on the morning of July 7, 2011, for a deceased person.

Gilbert said after arriving, Const. Duane Squires pointed at an office and said “in there”.

He said he walked in expecting a possible heart attack victim and was struck by a distinct smell and then saw a man’s body on the floor with lots of dried blood.

Gilbert said he then realized it was a crime scene and backed out of the office, noting he was not wearing any protective clothing.

Under cross-examination, Gilbert said he would not have entered the unprocessed office if he knew what he was dealing with before he arrived.

The trial continues on Monday afternoon.
