Fire At Irving Pulp And Paper

No one was hurt after a piece of equipment caught fire at the Irving Pulp and Paper Mill in west Saint John.

Steve Voutour, platoon chief with the Saint John Fire Department, says the call came in around 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

“The equipment is an external device used to offload chips from railcars into a hopper, and the hopper feeds it onto a conveyor belt,” said Voutour.

The fire was put out quickly with the help of crews from the mill, he said.

No word on what caused the fire.
