Saturday Morning Sports For February 2nd

In Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action:

The Saint John Sea Dogs fell to Québec 1-0 for their seventh straight loss.

They wrap up their three-game road trip Saturday night against Blainville-Boisbriand.

Meantime, winger Maxim Cajkovic has been named the QMJHL Rookie of the Month for January.

 

In junior hockey action:

The St. Stephen Aces edged the Edmundston Blizzard 6-5.

Brandon Costa had a pair of goals for St. Stephen; Noah Holm, Liam Smith, Adam Zimmermann and Zach Alchorn also scored.

 

In the NHL:

The three Canadian teams on the ice Friday night all came out on the losing end.

Toronto fell to Detroit 3-2 in overtime, Ottawa lost to Pittsburgh 5-3, and Calgary fell to Washington 4-3.

 

The annual Dairy Town Classic basketball tournament wraps up Saturday in Sussex.

In men’s action, Sussex takes on Moncton at 9 a.m. in the fifth place game, while Fredericton and Dartmouth play in the championship game at 1 p.m.

On the ladies side, it is Sussex versus Charlottetown in the fifth place game at 9 a.m., St. Malachy’s against Moncton in the third place game at 11 a.m., and Fredericton plays Citadel in the championship game at 3 p.m.

The Sonic award is being re-named in honour of fallen Fredericton police officer Const. Robb Costello, a former Sussex Corner resident, Sussex Regional High School player, and Dairy Town Classic alumni.
