The Free Outdoor Community Rink At ‘Ihtoli maqahamok – The Gathering Space’ Is Open For The Season

Skating is my favourite wintertime activity, so when the free outdoor community rink at ‘Ihtoli maqahamok – The Gathering Space’ opened for the season last week, I had lace up and hit the ice!

The rink’s name ‘Ihtoli maqahamok’, is Wolastoqey for “The Gathering Space”. A perfect name for this waterfront spot that has been a hub for music, celebrations, and festivals for decades.

By skating here, you’re part of a long history of people coming together at the water’s edge! It was built specifically to be a landmark of togetherness which makes every shared laugh (and every shared wipeout) feel more special!

Don’t own ice skates? No problem!

The Saint John Public Library – Central Branch, located on the second level of Market Square, is home to the “Skate Lending Library”, where you can borrow skates for free with your library card!

Looking for the perfect Wintertime Afternoon Itinerary? Try this!

Step 1: Stop by the Library and borrow some skates if you don’t have your own.

Step 2: Head to Ihtoli maqahamok and find your groove.

Step 3: Snap a photo of the beautiful Saint John Waterfront.

Step 4: Return the skates and grab a warm drink at Market Square.

Congratulations! You’ve just participated in a tradition of “togetherness” that goes back generations.

Have a photo you’ve taken at The Gathering Space? Feel free to share it!
