On this date, back in 1992, the number one song on the country charts was from Collin Raye – Love, Me. The song was Raye’s very first number one single and that year received a nomination from Song of the Year from the CMA. According to wikipedia, the song is a popular choice for funerals.
The song tells a story about a couple who promise to always love one another. The story is told from the point of view of a grandson. In verse one, he talks about spending time with his grandfather and reading a note from his grandmother when she was a youngster in love with the grandfather. In verse two, the grandson and grandfather are at a church – the grandfather is reading the note from many years ago and crying. The 15 year old grandson has never seen granddad crying before and it touches him deeply.
Love, Me was written by Skip Ewing who thought it was something special and wanted to record it himself. His producer dismissed it as “junk” and told him not to record it. Luckily, Collin Raye came across the song and loved it and the rest is history.
