Bringing People Back Uptown: A Vision for Saint John’s Future

For generations, Uptown Saint John was known as the shopping centre of the Maritimes. It was a place full of life—where people lived, worked, learned, and gathered daily. Today, while the streets are quieter, the bones of that vibrant city remain remarkably intact. Unlike many cities that lost their historic cores to demolition, Saint John still has almost all of its original buildings, along with newer structures like Brunswick Square, the Tower, and Market Square. Many of these buildings, especially their upper floors, now sit mostly empty—spaces that were once full of people and purpose.

So how do we bring Uptown back to life?

One clear opportunity lies in post‑secondary education. Saint John has one of the lowest numbers of post‑secondary students in the Maritimes, yet we also have an abundance of underused space. These two challenges could be solved together. By encouraging more colleges, universities, and training programs to offer courses Uptown, combined with affordable living spaces above storefronts and in existing buildings, we can create a thriving, youthful community in the heart of the city.

Students bring energy. They walk, shop, eat locally, attend events, and help sustain small businesses. When students live Uptown, the streets stay active beyond business hours, improving safety, vibrancy, and community connection. Mixed‑use buildings—classrooms, residences, studios, and small businesses—could transform underused properties into hubs of daily life.

What makes this vision achievable is that the infrastructure already exists. Saint John’s Uptown is arguably one of the most beautiful downtowns in Canada, with its historic architecture, walkability, and waterfront. Instead of building outward, we can build smarter—revitalizing what we already have while addressing pressing needs such as education, housing, and population growth.

Saint John needs more young people, more learning opportunities, and more activity Uptown. With creative partnerships, political will, and community support, we can turn empty spaces into opportunity and history into momentum.

Love ❤️ Saint John.
Let’s invest in education, people, and place—and make our city better for generations to come.
